You are in: Corporative Responsibility and Sustainability > Environment and climate change > ICT Application Challenge

ITU and Telefónica invite you to participate in the 3rd Green ICT Application Challenge. This contest will be awarded to the application that best helps to promote Smart Sustainable Cities and environmental sustainability in urban areas.
Entrants can submit concepts individually or as part of a team. Submissions must be original and should deal with one of the following subjects:
The winner will be selected according to criteria including impact, scalability, the degree of innovation, feasibility, the quality of the implementation plan and the business model. In addition, priority will be given to applications that can help developing countries to solve environmental problems in an urban context.
The impact of urban areas on natural resources necessitates a path of sustainable growth and development for the expansion of cities. It is expected that 70 per cent of the world population will be urban by 2050, and that most of this growth will occur in less developed countries. Cities currently emit 71 per cent of total greenhouse gases and consume between 60 and 80 per cent of the world’s energy. Innovative use of ICTs can drive solutions to make cities more efficient and sustainable
With the Challenge III, ITU and Telefónica are one step ahead of the Call to Action on “Smart Sustainable Citiesâ€, submitted in September at the ITU Green Standards Week in Paris for search ICT solutions that can be standardized for smart cities.
What can I win? A prize of 5,000 US dollars will be awarded to the most innovative project.
Who can participate?: The Challenge is open to individuals from Member States of the ITU (see www.itu.int/members/index.html). Participants must be of age of majority in their country at the time of registration.
Staff of the ITU and of the sponsors of the Challenge, as well as members of the
jury are not eligible to participate in this Challenge.
